How Many Steps Should You Walk in a Day?
For most adults, 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day is a good target. The 10,000 figure is not a requirement — the benefit starts well before it.
The short answer: 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day is a good, realistic target for most adults. If you currently walk very little, getting to 4,000-6,000 will already show a difference.
Where did 10,000 come from?
Not from medical research — it came from the name of a pedometer sold in Japan in the 1960s. It is a tidy round number, not a threshold. The health benefits start accruing considerably earlier.
What matters more than the count
- Pace — walking briskly asks more of the heart and lungs
- Consistency — 6,000 every day beats 15,000 once a week
- Breaking up sitting — two or three minutes on your feet each hour
How to build up
Add 500-1,000 steps a week to whatever you do now. Jumping straight to a target is how most people quit within a fortnight. Stairs instead of the lift, walking while on the phone, and ten minutes after a meal will lift the count on their own.
